Hill Country Cattle Co.
is owned by Johnnie and Vanessa Moore. They have
one son, Cody who will be 4 years old in April
of 2008 and are awaiting the arrival of their
daughter in February of 2008. Most of their life
has evolved around cattle shows. They met at the
North American and were engaged at a Jr.
Nationals and announced the coming of their
first child, Cody, at the Simmental Breeders
Sweepstakes. Johnnie is the manager of Double S
Simmentals, owned by Steve and Leisa Shirley,
where he was awarded the "Herdsman of the Year"
by his peers in 2003 for his work at Double S.
He is currently the Vice President of the
Kentucky Simmental Association. Vanessa is a
store manager for the Tractor Supply Co. (TSC)
in Glasgow, Kentucky. Together they have slowly
built a herd of Simmental and Simangus females
that have not only proved themselves in the show
ring, but in the pasture as well. The cattle in
the herd are selected for soundness first,
followed by cow family and production. We strive
to produce cattle that will perform in all
segments of the industry, whether it is the
commercial or seed stock producer as well as the
show ring. We feel that by selecting cattle that
are sound from the ground up and mating them to
bulls that are commercially and purebred
approved, we can produce a product to better the
industry.
Vanessa was raised in Hillsboro, Tennessee, where
she showed Hereford cattle in 4H and FFA. She
competed at Local, State, and National shows
with the cattle she raised. She attended Middle
Tennessee State University and was on their
Judging team while there. Upon graduation, she
started her career with Tractor Supply Co.
Johnnie grew up in Adams Co, Ohio, where he
showed steers and breeding cattle in 4H and FFA.
He raised Chianina cattle and was a state FFA
beef proficiency award winner. He won several
championsh ips at the state and national level
with the cattle he raised. While in 4H and FFA,
he won numerous awards in livestock judging. He
was proud to be a part of both a
State-winning
4H and FFA team and competed in both national
contests.
He attended Ohio State University and continues
to work with students as interns for Double S
and support their judging team through workouts
provided at the farm. Today he judges many shows
in the area to help young people develop their
showmanship skills and knowledge of the beef
industry. After college, Johnnie managed his
first Simmental operation, Topsy Curvy Farms in
Batavia, Ohio, where he was able to work with
top donors such as the Moon Glow female.
He was also able to produce the TCF Miss Ginger
female that was successful in the Triple C herd.
He then did some freelance fitting work for many
people and breeds across the country until he
started working for Double S in 1998. During
this time, he acquired knowledge in breeding and
marketing from successful operations such as
DeRoyal Charolais (Chuck Druin) and Hartman
Cattle Co (Mike Hartman and Steve Kruiz.)
Knowledge gained from these operations has
helped us develop top genetics that can be
utilized by many people in all segments of the
industry.
Hill Country Cattle
is proud to be a part of the
Breeders Top Ten Sale
group where most of are
cattle are marketed (bulls on the fourth
Saturday in March and females on the third
Saturday in April) with some of our elite
genetic females
selling in Denver and the North
American. We enjoy showing our cattle and
competing with other breeders and use this as a
tool to measure where we are in the breed, as
well as a valuable
marketing avenue.
